Exhibition “Disquieting Muses”
Duration: July 5–September 4, 2011
Venue: Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki
(Warehouse Β1, Thessaloniki port area)
The exhibition ‘Disquieting Muses’ will be presented at the Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki, part of the State Museum of Contemporary Art, (Warehouse B1, Thessaloniki port area) from July 5 till September 4, 2011 (opening on 5.07 at 20:30). In the exhibition, works by 7 contemporary women artists, whose origin is from the Arab world and Middle East, will be presented; artists who, due to historical and political circumstances, have chosen or have been obliged to take distance from their birth places. Through a wide range of artistic tools (photography, video, sketching, installation, painting, performance) the artworks by Diana Al-Hadid, Lara Baladi, Zoulikha Bouabdellah, Mona Hatoum, Hayv Kahraman, Majida Khattari and Zineb Sedira comprise the notion of threat and uneasiness, under the allure of the perfectly designed form, provoking mixed reactions of attraction and repulse.
The exhibition “Disquieting Muses” is part of the "Thessaloniki: Cultural Crossroads" programme of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism, focussing this year on the Middle East and is implemented with the financial support of OPAP S.A.
